The Valke Rugby Union Club

The Valke, formerly known as the Stenbaan Marais and now referred to as the Hano Valke (Horse Racing Club) for sponsorship reasons, are an independent South African rugby club in Gauteng which plays in the annual Currie Bowl tournament. Formed in the early 1990s, the club started out as a rugby league club and later added rugby union. Their first match was played against the Currie Bowl in November of 1997, playing in the final against the Bulls. They were beaten by the Bulls and then the Lions, losing the first division title to the Lions.

They have had quite a resurgence in recent years and are now one of the top rugby league clubs in South Africa. They currently have three full-time players on their squad, with a further two being part of a training squad.

Their history is rich, with a number of notable players including David van Zyl (captain), Bongi Mbonambi, Albert van Wyk and Johan Goosen, and former players such as Bernard Foley, Elton Jantjies and Ruan Pienaar. They are also known to have had many international appearances, including a match for the Springboks in 1997.

They have recently been playing rugby for the first division South African Rugby Union, although they have not featured at this level since January 2020. In addition to this, they also play in a professional league, the Currie Cup, which is run by the rugby league governing body, the IRB (International Rugby Board). The tournament is one of the most competitive in the world and this year sees the Currie Bowl takes place at Twickenham Stadium in London.

As well as their regular matches in the Currie Bowl tournament, they are also active in international tournaments such as the Junior Cup and the African Nations Cup. As a club, the club has developed from a rugby league club to a successful club with an established rugby union programme. Although they are relatively new to the professional stage of rugby, they have developed a strong following from rugby lovers who regularly attend their games and many of these people have taken up the sport of rugby union as well.

The club are also involved in developing their rugby training facilities, allowing them to be an important player in the development of rugby in South Africa. They currently host the Currie Cup Final between their South African opponents the Bulls and Lions, and the Junior Cup, which takes place in December.

As a club, Valke are determined to stay in the professional rugby union game and have been instrumental in the development of the game in South Africa. Many South African rugby fans consider them to be amongst the elite clubs in the country, and many are not disappointed with their results on the international stage. Their current players have included the likes of Bongi Mbonambi, Albert Van Wyk, Bernard Foley, and Johan Goosen, and they have also won a major trophy at the 2020 FIFA World Cup, the Rugby World Cup.
