A Simple System For Teaching Kids How to Play an Agile Ball Point Game

In an earlier article I wrote about the Agile method of agile software development we employ at Aberystwyth University. In that article I mentioned how the sport of Cricket can be used as an analogy to describe the agile development process. In this article we will go a bit deeper and describe in detail the characteristics of a cricket pitch, and how the sport of cricket can be used as an agile testing case.

In the game of Cricket, the bowlers take their turn to hit the cricket ball with a bat, and in so doing run up to the stumps. Once the stumps are reached, the team members sprint forward one foot at a time, attempting to knock the ball out of the air. If the object comes straight from the manufacturer, EAN, Color: green, used for tennis balls, VQ: yellow, unused like a clear or printed box or bag:

In this sport we can make use of a very similar process, only adapted to the agile life. The object is to try to knock the ball out of the air, rather than trying to hit the ball with a bat. The agile scrum works exactly in the same way, using a large group of test cases to generate outcomes and check values. This large group of cases can be loosely segregated into smaller test cases, each divided by a flexible scrum management feature.

Scrums can be broken into three main stages. In the first stage, the sprint begins, the sprint is made up of two minutes of playing time, and the team member is allowed to hit the balls. In the second stage, the game slows down to a crawl. Each team member is allowed to play for two minutes and any fouls incurred during that time are penalised with a point. A point can be won when the ball goes out of play in the designated area (the "arena") twice or if a team member hits the ball with the racket in this area. At this point the game slows down drastically and a slow-down regulation is applied. Each team member is allowed only two minutes to play in a game; any more and the ball may be stopped. When a team member starts an attack without the ball in play in the designated area, this is a penalty. If a team member commits a foul against the other team member, this is also a foul; and the penalty is enforced with a fine. After these restrictions have been applied, the ball may begin to be played.

This is a very simple but effective method for teaching people to play an agile ball point game. There are no physical markers like markers on the court; the play is entirely governed by the players. And you can easily adapt this system to a number of other sports, such as volleyball and lacrosse. You can also use this same system to teach younger children how to hit tennis balls, since most kids at school will be used to hitting a ball with a wooden bat or even a tennis racket.
