When you are working, your work affects your life in many ways. Your work may make the world a better place, or help you to accomplish something that you have set out to do. Your work may make you financially independent, or provide for the people in your life. Your work may be physically stimulating, mentally stimulating or both. No matter what your work brings into your life, it is important to know your rights as a working person.
A fair work arrangement can provide you with the financial security and freedom you deserve, while also allowing you to pursue your personal interests in a way that is satisfying to you. The current arrangement most people live under is known as "proxied existence." This means that your work is separated from your life, so you are not directly dependent on your employer to provide you with things such as benefits and a paycheck. Your work provides you with a set of tasks or activities through which you are able to gain certain rewards and paychecks, but these tasks and activities are not yours alone. Your employer is not able to control what you do in your work time, nor are you able to benefit by performing these tasks.
If you want to have a healthy and successful career, you need to be able to separate your work from your life. A good work ethic encourages self-control, responsibility and respect for your employer and fellow employees. The structure of your employment will likely dictate the level of independence that you enjoy. If you are fortunate enough to work in a company that treats you fairly, and enables you to be a part of a team that shares the common goals you have for the business, then you have a solid work ethic. However, if you work in an office environment where there is no mutuality regarding the rules or structure of your employment, or you are required to perform tasks beyond your ability, then you have a workaholic work ethic.
Most employers think of supervisors as being on call all day to provide instruction or answer questions about company policy or to simply take phone calls. In reality, most supervisors' work is not just consists of standing up and taking phone calls. A good supervisor understands the critical importance of providing meaningful and valuable work to employees and gives them a reason to do so.
A great manager knows that the company is first and foremost, and any worker who is employed by the company will be better paid than someone who is not. A manager knows that a productive employee receives greater meaning and value from his or her work and will receive greater lifetime earnings from their work. This type of thinking will benefit not only the company but the employees as well.
When you treat your employees with respect and create a work environment where they can feel important, valuable and valued, you will find that they are more productive and will increase in numbers over time. You will find that your profits will rise because you will be paying your employees for their work. You will also find that they will become loyal to your company and remain there for the long term. This makes your company a great success. This type of thinking and attitude is the way that business must be done to survive.
