Teacher Suspension After Reports of Sexual Harassment
According to Blytheville School District superintendent Richard Twill, many parents with children in the school met him last week after the school and reported several Asian students were holding Donald Trump stickers and screaming racial taunts at the athletes on the Blytheville ville team. "I've seen it before," Twill said, adding that he has heard of complaints about similar situations elsewhere in the nation as well. "It's disappointing to me, the kids don't think it's as big of a deal as they might. We have a very strong antidiscrimination policy here at Blytheville."
Twill also cited inappropriate behavior by students from some of the minority groups. He said one female student had brought a water bottle to the game and poured it near the field. She was asked by other students to put it away and she did. But other students later confronted her and said, "You threw a water bottle at us, now we are going to get one if you're not going to get out of this class." She was asked to leave the class. Two students have been arrested after a scuffle between two groups of students last week. Police say the two boys tried to rob a Hispanic boy on his way home from school. The boy took one of the boys' cell phones and tried to call his family. When the mother of one of the boys saw what had happened, she confronted the robbers and the two fought. The boys were arrested.
Richard Twill and the Blytheville City School District have received several complaints over the past several months. Many of the complaints come from parents who have sent their children to the Richlandsville Schools. According to the Richlandsville Police Department, several meetings have been held with concerned parents. Superintendent Paul Johnson and other school leaders met with the South Carolina State Highway Patrol last Friday to discuss concerns regarding safety. Superintendent Johnson hopes that he can work with all school districts to assure proper safety precautions are in place.
Richard Twill is a well-respected teacher. He has worked for the Richlandsville City Schools for 22 years. His services will always be needed and appreciated. However, the Richlandsville Police and the District Attorney's Office have to take care of any consequences that come from any type of police involvement with Twill or any of his students. This is important because the police should be able to do their job without harassment or interference from external parties.
Richard Twill is not being fired. He is working to resolve the situation with the district and the police. There are no plans to fire Twill. Richard Twill is going to continue to teach at Richard Twill Elementary until all of the current issues with the Richlandsville City Schools are resolved.
